Restaurant Review: Jacob Wirth

I've been to Jacob Wirth twice (due to overzealous purchase of Groupons) and wasn't thrilled either time.  The ambiance is quite nice with a cozy feel and tables spaced close together.  On Friday nights, a pianist is brought in to play songs from the 60s-80s and the whole restaurant sings along, which is pretty cool if you plan on singing, but pretty terrible if you plan on conversing.  The restaurant is booked months ahead for Friday nights, so be prepared to wait at least half an hour.

The cornbread was pretty decent, soft and moist, and the butter was meltingly sweet.

The extensive beer selection and atmosphere are the only real reasons to visit.

If you stay for dinner and are interested in German food, order the wiener schnitzel or nothing at all.  Although the lemon butter sauce was just okay, the veal was quite tender and the crumb coating was crisp.  I also really enjoyed the spaetzle, which had a wonderful sprinkling of dill.

The sauerbraten had anything but the advertised melt-in-your-mouth texture.  The disappointing tough and stringy meat was slathered in a decent gingersnap gravy and sitting atop dill spaetzle.  Red cabbage, although not usually my favorite, was pretty tasty.

No, I wouldn't go back for the food.  Expecting the German food to be authentic and delicious, I previously ordered bratwurst but was seriously disappointed. It had a terrible spongy texture and no flavor.  Same with the weisswurst.  The burgers are also okay, nothing great.  There are definitely better restaurants in the area.
